AROUND THE CLASSES

This week in FSU we have shifted our topic to looking at Appledore and our local area. We thought about howe we travel to school and completed a tally chart of how many cars pass the school in a period of 10mins. On Wednesday Dora The Explorer left us some clues around the school to find and then we had a go at making up our own clues. Then we had a think about the activities that we like to do in Appledore and the special places we like to go to.
Don't forget next week is our Open Afternoon on Tuesday at 3pm, if your child attends Turtles and isn't in that afternoon please see Miss Olliffe to look through your child's Learning Journey. Parents in Dolphins - if you would like a school packed lunch for our trip on Thursday please let Mrs Bannister know at the latest on Monday.

In Year 1 we have had lots of exciting events this week. Sports Day on Tuesday was fantastic with everyone keen to take part and trying their best to win points for their team. Thank you for all your support with Sports Day. On Wednesday the children had a morning with Mrs Stanbury to get to know her better. On Thursday we went to the church for our Open the Book Assembly. In between all of this we have fitted in some maths, learning to tell the time to the hour and half hour. In Writing we have been looking at the book The Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch and learning new vocabulary from the story.

This week Lundy Puffins have been publishing their books inspired by ' The Dragon Machine'. Everyone enjoyed Sports Day and cheered on their classmates in the races in the morning and worked well in their teams in the afternoon. They had a fun morning in year one on Wednesday and enjoyed walking to the church on Thursday and joining in with the 'open the book' assembly. They are very much looking forward to performing their songs and music to you this afternoon. As next week is the last week, we will begin to send things home, so if children could bring in a carrier bag that would be really helpful.

Seahunter have had a very busy but successful week. On Tuesday, they did an amazing job at sports day, representing their houses with great team spirit and enthusiasm. On Wednesday, we visited Exeter Museum to take part in Ancient Egypt workshops. These included visiting a real mummy in her tomb, learning how to write like an Egyptian, playing an Egyptian game called Senet and mummifying a body! The children were brilliant learners and asked amazing questions. The museum staff commented on what an amazing group they were so they should be very proud of themselves.

This week in Maths, Year 4 have been continuing thier learning on Geometry and have been focusing on identifying and comparing quadrilaterals and triangles. In Literacy, we have been using a success criteria to plan, write and edit our own versions of our text. For P.E, we had a tennis session with a coach that came in which the children really enjoyed! The class have carried out some science experiments this week linked to states of matter, where we looked at changing states e.g. from a liquid to a gas. We have also been learning more about habitats and created some classification keys. The children had a brilliant time on Sports Day and did each of their houses proud!

Year 5 have been busy completing work towards their Arts Award this week - we hope to share this with parents in September. Thank you to all of you who were able to watch the performance on Monday. Children have a short questionnaire for you to answer with regards to this. We have also been completing science about 'Animals including Humans' and have had many discussions about how we change and develop as we become older. Over the summer holidays I have asked children to keep up work on times tables and to go over the spelling lists for year 5 and 6. Please can payments for Skern swimming be made by Monday.

Y6 have had another busy week! Last Friday the class worked together to help run a stall at the summer fayre. They worked together, outside of school, to produce suitable games for the afternoon. Then on Monday they had a fun time at the Wakepark. On Tuesday it was their last sports day; they were amazing at supporting all the younger children in both the morning races and afternoon team events. They are now looking forward to their afternoon of sailing with the North Devon Yacht Club. Next week looks to be equally busy ending with leavers assembly at 2:30pm next Friday.

Have a wonderful weekend everybody
From Jeremy Cooper and all the staff and children.
