AROUND THE CLASSES
This week in Turtles and Dolphins we have been reading the story ‘Stick Man.’ We thought about lots of different objects that Stick Man could become. We have painted with sticks and drawn pictures of Stick Man in different places. Today, we went down to the woods to make Stick Man.
Another busy week in Year 1, we have looked at how adjectives make a story more interesting and came up with our own to describe different pictures and characters. In values we are looking at friendship and this week thought about what it means to be included or excluded from a game. We read a story together linked to this and discussed how the characters would be feeling. We talked about ways we could make sure others don’t feel excluded from games. As part of our RE learning this week we went down to Appledore Baptist Church to sing to a community group called ‘Oasis for ladies’. They meet once a month to play games, chat, have a coffee and some cake together. The group is made up of members from the church and local residents. We had a lovely time and there are some photos on google classroom. We have been busy rehearsing this week and can’t wait to perform it to you next week! Have a lovely weekend.
Year 2 have been looking at 3D shapes this week in Maths. They have been sorting them, naming them and looking at their properties. In English, they are looking at a Christmas video and have been writing a letter to one of the characters. They have learned about the explorer Christopher Columbus. Christmas play rehearsals are well underway and they are putting the finishing touches to their performance. They are looking forward to an outdoor learning session today (Friday) where they will be looking at food chains and finishing with some Christmas craft.
Year 3 explored what Hindus are celebrating during the festival of Diwali. Year 5 looked to see if they could find the true meaning of Christmas is a range of television adverts. Year 6 looked at some of the stories in the Hebrew bible and considered the most important commandment to Jewish people. In music lessons, rehearsals continued for Bethlehem Ballroom. The year 6 Charleston is a strong contender for the glitter ball but the year 5 salsa is looking very good too. Years 3 and 4 are also in the mix with their beautifully performed waltz and jive.
Year 3 have had a brilliant week! In English, we began reading The First Drawing. We wrote a diary entry as though we were the boy from the book and described a day in the life of someone living in the Stone Age. In Maths, we have been using a range of methods to multiply and divide by 3, 4 and 8. We then used these methods to answer multiplication and division word problems. In Guided Reading, we continued reading Too Small Tola, and we used our inference skills to describe how different characters were feeling in the story. In Science, we researched and learnt all about how igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks are formed. In History, we explored the Bronze Age and learnt that knowledge of bronze was brought to Britain by the Bell Beaker people who migrated to Britain. In Computing, we created our own branching databases, and this time we used them to find out information.
In Year 4 this week, the children have finished their A Walk around a Roman Villa writing and have moved onto looking at poetry to end the Autumn term. The children have read a variety of poems this week and practised performing one in front of the class! In Maths, the children solved some problems which involved multiplying three numbers together. In Science, we looked at the different types of teeth and what they’re used for, as well as learning about the different parts of a tooth. They also took part in some outdoor learning where they looked at different animal skulls and worked out whether they were herbivores or carnivores just by looking at their teeth. In PE, the children continued practising their netball skills of using different passes and marking the opponent. In Art, the children designed and painted some beautiful illuminated letters.
Year 5 has shown true showmanship this week. They spent a morning in the community hall adapting the Christmas play for the performance at the Appledore Christmas light switch on. All are very excited about the first performance and, due to their amazing effort, will do really well. If you were unable to get to the hall then it will be repeated again, in St Mary’s Church, at the end of term, with the rest of KS2. Back in the classroom we have now completed drafting our new monster stories and will publish these next week. In maths we have been converting mixed numbers to improper fractions, and vice versa. We have completed all end of term assessments, including maths and reading. We found out more about the old Norse language, in history, and which words we still use today. We are looking forward to the class visit to RHS Rosemoor next week.
Year 6 have been comparing fractions using the denominator and numerator this week as well as revising 3D shape and nets.. In Literacy, they have found out about Harry Clement and started planning a biography about him. It’s been a sporty week with the Multi-skills festival at ARC and with some children going to Shebbear for a hockey festival too – all very enjoyable. They have also enjoyed preparing for the Open the Book Christmas Assembly in the church. Secret Santa gifts need to be in school by Wednesday 11th December please
