North Devon Fringe Theatrefest
The North Devon Fringe Theatrefest is back over the weekend of 27th-30th June 2019! There are many shows across the weekend, at an affordable price, and some shows for families are ‘Pay-What-You-Will’ at the end of the show. Atlantic Raquet Centre
SUPER FREE TENNIS WEEKEND takes place Sat 8th and Sun 9th at Atlantic Racquet Centre. The centre is open all weekend for families to try tennis for FREE and take advantage of some great offers on beginner tennis courses during the summer. For more info visit www.atlanticracquetcentre.co.uk/opendays
Cricket for Girls
On Monday, Devon cricket came into deliver cricket sessions for girls. If your daughter enjoyed the cricket and is interested in taking it up, your nearest cricket club is Bideford and Littleham Cricket Club at Westward Ho!. They run a session just for girls on a Monday evening and also sessions for boys and girls on a Friday, starting at 6pm. For more information, contact Andy Davies on 01271 314306

AROUND THE CLASSES
Welcome back after the holidays. In Dolphins and Turtleswe had lots of chats on Tuesday about all the exciting things that we had been up to in the holidays. We have moved our theme away from dinosaurs and started to look at farm animals. This week we have thought about what we already know about farms and made a class book based on the story ‘Farmyard Hullabaloo’. We have drawn pictures of farm animals and played Maths games counting animals into their pens, adding them and subtracting them.
We have had a busy first week back in Year 1. We are preparing for the Year 1 Phonics Screening next week so we have been going ‘Phonics Crazy’. Each day we have been completing five activities related to a sound, it has been very fun. In Maths we have been learning about position and direction, we have been learning vocabulary such as forwards, backwards, left, right, clockwise and anti-clockwise. Our Philosophy session this week used the book Mrs Wobble the Waitress, we discussed the question ‘Why were the family so successful?’ On Tuesday morning we had a Tennis assembly and taster session with Tom from Atlantic Racquet Centre. We learnt all about the history of tennis and then got to play games with the tennis equipment.
Welcome back after the half term break. This week Lundy Puffins received a letter and various pieces of evidence from the ‘UK Dragon Society’ to say that a dragon had been sighted around Appledore. They went into the jungle to look for clues and found a dragon egg! They are now writing instructions for how to trap the dragon for observation purposes. In Maths, they have been completing investigations involving addition and subtraction. They have started a new science topic: plants.
Seahunter’s week got off to an exciting start as they were involved in tennis workshops run by Tom from The Atlantic Racquet Centre. They really enjoyed finding out about the history of tennis before playing some great games to develop their skills. They then spent most of the day working hard on their bookmaking skills. They have created books about The Discovery of Tutankhamun’s Tomb, which are on the writer’s wall for you to enjoy if you’re passing. They are very impressive as they have worked so hard to include ambitious vocabulary and keep their readers interested.
This week in Maths, Year 4 have been working on column addition and column subtraction in the context of money. They have also solved and written their own worded problems linked to addition and subtraction. In English, we have started to look at a new text ‘A Walk in London’. We have looked at some of the skills used by the author and mapped out the route taken to write a set of instructions. Our Philosophy session was linked to R.E this week. The children heard the story ‘Ali’s Hajj’ and came up with the big question ‘Is it always right to give what you have to other people that need it more than you?’ In Computing, the children have started to learn how to read data from databases. Later in the week, the class enjoyed going to Atlantic Racquet Centre for a multiskills festival based on rugby skills. They worked collaboratively with children from other schools. Well done HMS Echo!
In Year 5, we have completed our work on angles in Maths and read another book ‘I am Cat’ by Jackie Morris in Literacy – her detailed illustrations amazed us.We are now moving on to more shape work in Maths (area and perimeter) and Extreme Animals in Literacy. In Science we experimented with friction, finding out what the best material would be to use for break pads on a tricycle. We have been continuing our work on Carmen in Music and have completed our rainsticks in Art. Children have been sent home, this week, with an SOE3 for our trip to the Mix later this month – please complete and return as soon as possible.
This week in Year 6, we’ve started a Smarties investigation in a work booklet and are drawing nets for our new packaging designs, measuring and using data handling skills. In English, we have been writing reports on air pollution and plastics pollution. We are now looking at another environmental issue to produce a poster or leaflet on. Also we learnt about the different layers of the atmosphere and how different pollutions are affecting it. We have been busy practicing our Y6 leavers play as well. Please look out for the letter regarding all the events happening this half term.
