All the children coped so well with the contrasting weather on the two days that Sports Day had to be spread over and the result was as follows:
1st Atlantic (green) with 7,716 points
2nd Arctic (blue) with 7,553 points
3rd Pacific (red) with 7,272 points
4th Inidan (yellow) with 6,027 points
Thank you for all of your support of the children and staff in making both days a success and with the appropriate and healthy level of competitiveness.
Summer Fair Message from the PTFA
Children are welcome to wear their own clothes on the day of the fair for a £1 donation. The fair will be held on Friday 7th July, 3.30pm -5.30pm.
If you are able to donate the following, please bring them in to the school office: any raffle prizes, new DVD’s and plants.

New Summer School/Holiday Club at Appledore School
The Splodge Summer School will be running here at our school this Summer holiday for children currently in Year One to Year Six. Sessions will run from 10am until 3pm Monday to Friday. Splodge is run by Kate Harvey (our art coordinator at Appledore School) who is looking forward to lots of arty Summer fun with the children. We are now taking bookings for the weeks beginning Monday 7th August and Monday 14th August. AROUND THE CLASSES
FSU have moved to Peter Pan fairy tale this week alongside of sports day! We had our own mini sports day on Monday making a medal in the morning and being presented with it after our sports. We have identified the characters in Peter Pan, becoming mermaids and crocodiles. We made up own rules for the lost boys to follow. We have painted fairies, crocodiles and used pastels to paint bears. We talked about a comfort item that we would take with us if we were to fly to Neverland.

What a busy week for Year 1! Everyone had a great time at Sports Day and represented their teams well. Watching the children improve at their activities, in the short time they were given, was really impressive to watch. The rest of this week has mainly been focused on how to stay cool in this incredible weather we have been having. We have taken our learning into the Jungle, and taken it in turns to play in the water tray. For Maths through Stories week we have used the book One is a Snail, Ten is a Crab. We have made a number line using the characters from the book, we have checked that there really are 100 snails on the last page by numbering each one, and have written addition and multiplication number sentences to match the pages from the book. We have also written about our time in Year One, thinking about our strengths, what we would like to get better at and the highlights of the year.
Well done to everyone in Lundy Puffins for taking part in sports’ day parts 1 and 2! This week we have finished the boats that were started on ‘Clay Day’ by painting them and adding string to the masts. In Maths they have used the book ‘Uno’s Garden’ to support their work on number sequences and halving and doubling. In English, they have been describing settings. For their topic work they have been finding out about a lady called Grace Darling. Ask them to tell you who she was!
This week Seahunter enjoyed taking part in sports day to raise points for their houses. Each child has worked really hard for their teams! The childen have made good progress in Science and have had lots learning. We have discovered that we need a light source to see in the dark and experimented with how light reflects and how to change direction of the beam. To help us with our Maths, we have spent time in the jungle meausring the height of trees and creating Venn diagrams with hoops! We have also been lucky enough to have a cricket coach come in to teach us new skills.
Well, what an eventful (and warm) week. Everyone took part in the Sports Day events enthusiastically despite the heat on Tuesday. Well done to everyone! This week, our work, has been based on the book The Bad Tempered Ladybird written by Eric Carle so lots of focus on telling the time and calculating differences between times. They have been researching their chosen sea creature for our own class version. Expertise in using correct punctuation and layout for speech has been rapidly improving. Reminder please about Bikeability for all those pupils who have signed up is on Monday.
Year 5 have been finding out about the number of days in each month using the story ‘365 Penguins’, as well as working out how many penguins would be in each row of a pyramid if they stood on top of each other (working on triangular numbers). Some children even started to work out their own storage ideas for 365 penguins, which really wasn’t that easy. They have also seen how many a million is and tried to spend £1, 000, 000. Due to the heat, we have had to vacate outside and incorporated building tetrahedron structures out of bamboo sticks. We actually made quite a large structure when we joined all the smaller structures together – a child could sit in the middle! In art we have painted our clay boats and most children have remembered to bring in tubes in preparation for making rain sticks. We’ve also enjoyed sports day and are looking forward to Chivenor on Friday.
This week has been a quite enjoyable week on most fronts. As far as Maths was concerned, pretty much all of us liked the work on theme parks and money. We had to plan, design and operate a (thankfully a fictitious) attraction. As well as that we worked on the golden rectangles i.e. Fibonacci’s Number sequence. In English, we have completed a recount of Oceanfest and sports day. Our Clay boats are now completed. Today we all went to the Life Skills session at Barnstaple Rugby Club. We learnt about hoax calls, how to be safe around dogs, how to administer CPR, staying safe around electricity pylons, cyber-bullying and how to put out a chip pan fire. We certainly are now more aware of keeping safe.
Well done to William, Laurence and Harvey for performing so brilliantly in Oliver at the Plough Theatre.
