Christmas Fair today after school in the school car park!
First the class Christmas hoops in the main corridor and then a week of Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 nativities. Thank you for coming along and being the audiences for these and we look forward to rounding them off next Friday with Key Stage 2 at St Mary’s Church.
Last Friday, year 5 performed Bethlehem Ballroom as part of the Appledore light switch on celebrations. It was tremendous fun. The children put on a great show which was truly enjoyed by the enthusiastic audience. They were a bit too enthusiastic actually as they got carried away with the scoring paddles which the children thoroughly enjoyed. Very well done to the year 5 children. I can’t wait to see what happens next Friday. We will be staging the extended version of the show with dancing, singing and lots of Christmas laughs. We look forward to seeing you at St. Mary’s church for a lovely celebration of Christmas.

AROUND THE CLASSES
We are in full Christmas mode now in Turtles and Dolphins. We have decorated the classrooms making paperchains and stockings. We have read the Christmas story and linked this to our Nativity. We loved performing our nativity to you all. We have also been busy making Christmas cards and decorations.
Year 1 have had a fantastic week and really enjoyed taking part in the Nativity performances at the beginning of the week. The songs are still being sung around class. Thank you for coming along to see them perform. Christmas dinner day was great fun especially pulling crackers and eating all together, some children even tried new foods for the first time which was great. We have been looking at Seasons this week and the change from Autumn to Winter. Thinking about the changes in weather, animals hibernating and the festivals/celebrations that take place. In art we looked at the artist Kadinsky and thought about the shapes and lines he used to create his abstract painting. They then created their own abstract piece of artwork blending colours and creating bold outlines. Some photos from this week are on google classrooms for you to see. Have a great weekend!
Year 2 have had a brilliant week full of Nativity performances. They started the week showing the school, followed by two performances to their families. They did amazingly well with singing, dancing and acting. We hope that you all enjoyed it and thank you for all of your support with learning lines. In their History work, they found out about Explorer Neil Armstrong and made a timeline of his life. In Maths they have been making patterns with 2D and 3D shapes.
Year 3 have had a wonderful week. In English, we continued reading The First Drawing, and we used noun phrases to write a description of the woolly mammoth that the boy meets in the story. In Maths, we have been learning our multiples of eight, and have recapped how to use a number line to help us multiply and divide. In History, we learnt all about the Amesbury Archer and created a timeline of his life. We found out that his grave is the richest of any found from the Early Bronze Age. In Science, we found out how fossils are formed and created a booklet to explain the process. We also learnt all about an early fossil hunter, Mary Anning. On Thursday, we went on a trip to Rosemoor where we learnt about different plants that you might see in winter and collected leaves and other materials from outside to create our own Christmas decorations
In Year 4 this week, the children have been busy practising for the Christmas performance next Friday, where they have been doing lots of singing and dancing! In English, we have been looking at lots of different poems and we have been using some poems to write a few poems together as a class, ready to write their own poems next week. In Maths, we have spent this week revising lots of things taught since September, ready to start some new learning in January. In History, we looked at what a typical Roman town used to look like, which prepares us for our trip to Bath next week (information for the trip will go out next week). We also looked at what the Romans left behind and their legacy. In Computing, we practised using the repeat code to program shapes.
Year 5 have enjoyed writing winter Haiku and Cinquain poems; they have really had to think about vocabulary choices and syllables. In maths we have looked at comparing and ordering fractions. We completed our history unit by looking at how the Anglo-Saxon period ended with the Battle of Hastings and it becoming a Norman time of rule. Our outdoor learning session focused on mapping skills, knowing compass directions and understanding of grid references
Year 6 have been solving problems with fractions and applying all their skills. In Literacy, they are almost ready to publish their work on Harry Clement’s biography and in Reading they were able to compare the book and the film of Skellig. In Science, they have been looking at the effect of exercise on heart rate and how having a healthy lifestyle is important. They looked very festive in their Christmas jumpers and enjoyed their Christmas lunch – a welcome break from their hard work this week. Please keep a look out for information about Booster classes for SATs, which will start the second week back in January.
