Newsletter for the week ending 6th January
Welcome back and a very happy New year to you all. We hope you had an enjoyable break, free from all the illnesses circulating, and you have kept to your New Year’s resolutions! In assembly earlier this week we discussed New Year’s resolutions and this link has some interesting suggestions for children.
This week staff have safeguarding training related to contextual safeguarding and the staff training focus of Tuesday’s non-pupil day was further curriculum improvement and development.

Happy new year! This week in Turtles and Dolphins we have been learning about winter. On Wednesday we chatted about our Christmas holidays and painted pictures of them. On Thursday we shared our ideas about what winter means to us. We also looked at which countries on the globe get snow and why we think this might be. Today we went to The Jungle for a winter scavenger hunt.
It’s been lovely to be back in the classroom with Sea Lions (year 1) and hear all about what they got up to over the holidays! We have started our new topic called ‘How has nursing changed over time?’ and started by thinking about significant people and why they are significant. We then thought about the significant people in our lives, we drew a picture of someone important to us and then wrote about why they are special to us. In Writing we have started our new book called Weather. We started by doing a walk around school to see what the weather was like and then in groups we discussed different types of weather. We wrote down what we liked about that weather, what we didn’t like, what we would need to wear and adjectives to describe it.
Happy New Year to everyone in Year 2 and welcome back! It was great to see smiling faces excited to tell us all about their Christmas break. In Maths, they have started to learn about money and have been counting different amounts of money. There are some games on Google Classroom to support this learning at home. In English, they have started a new book called ‘Creature Features’ which is all about dinosaurs.
Year 3 have had a wonderful first week back and we enjoyed hearing about all of the exciting things that everyone got up to in the holiday. In Science, we have started our learning on bones. We researched the names of some of the bones in the human skeleton and found out some very interesting facts. We learned that the smallest bone in the human body is the stapes which is found in the ear! In English, we began reading the book ‘Fantastically Great Women who Changed the World’ and learned all about Gertrude Ederle who was the first woman to swim across the English Channel.
Welcome back HMS Echo (year 4) ! We’re looking forward to our trip to the Roman Baths on Friday. In preparation for this, we’ve recapped what we have learnt about the Romans, including Boudicca’s rebellion, why the Romans wanted to invade Britain and how we learn about the past. We’ve also learnt this week about the Roman roads, and which roads today were built by the Romans. In addition to this, we’ve begun looking at balance and agility as well as gymnastics in realPE and Sport, and we’ve been looking at what factors mean in Maths.
Welcome back Year 5. The spring term is going to be busy and we are excited about our new topics. In English we are writing diary entries from the perspective of a young boy who lived in London during the plague. Our maths continues to work on fractions and over the next few weeks we will be looking at how to add, subtract and multiply fractions. Our science unit this half term looks at Earth and Space. Unfortunately due to the fire at We the Curious, we will not be able to take a trip there this year. We are currently trying to get a visiting planetarium to visit school to support our learning. Our history topic will be finding out about the Great Plague and discovering more about the advances in medicine. For those taking part in the Bikeability sessions, letters will be given out on Friday to confirm dates.
To start the week the children discussed, wrote and drew what their New Year Resolutions would be. We hope they are able to stick to these as there were some great ideas! In maths we have been looking at measuring in different applications and to be able to convert metric measures. We have also revisited our work on fractions. Literacy this week has focused on the text ‘Pig Heart Boy’ by Malorie Blackman, which the children have found both fascinating and thought provoking and we hope this will stimulate some interesting debates. Topic work for this half term – Medicine, particularly looking at how our life expectancy had improved over the last 250 years. This should allow for some great discussions in class and hopefully plenty of research. Once again, many thanks to the children for being so mature and responsible whilst Mrs Mitchell is absent.
