Newsletter for the week ending 12th November
Next Friday (19th) is Children and Need and we invite the children to wear spots, stripes and any other Children in Need regalia for a donation that we will collect on the day.
We are currently planning the when and how surrounding the children’s celebrations of Christmas and will communicate these to you as soon as possible. We are planning for there to be a Foundation Stage (Turtles and Dolphins) nativity, a Key Stage 1 (years 1 & 2) nativity and a singing of carols by Key Stage 2 (years 3-6 and possibly more year groups). Sadly, due to the prevalence of Covid in our community, it is highly unlikely these will be performed to audiences consisting of parents, carers and the wider family and for this we are hugely dissapointed. We will ensure they are recorded for you to view and hope you understand and support this decision aimed at keeping families and staff safe immediately prior to us all breaking-up for Christmas break.

AROUND THE CLASSES
This week in Turtles and Dolphins we have been learning about Remembrance Day and why we wear poppies. We looked at old photographs on Tuesday and had a great discussion about why we thought they were old and when we thought they were taken. We have painted pictures of poppies and made collages of them. Today we walked down to the quay to look at the poppy display and the children in Dolphins also visited the church.
This week the children in year 1 have been very busy learning lots of new exciting skills. In writing, we have been recalling our learning about verbs and nouns. The children have been experimenting with different vocabulary to change the verbs in their sentences. In maths, the children have been learning about adding single-digit numbers. We have used lots of resources and images to show different ways of making 10 with two numbers. The children also compared number sentences by recalling learning we had done previously on greater than, less than, and equal to symbols. On Thursday, the children really enjoyed their outdoor learning session. They looked at how the weather changes through the seasons; we were lucky to avoid rain showers, however, we did get a little muddy! We continued our new topic on coasts this week by looking at map skills. The children explored how objects look different from a birds-eye view and drew some interesting plan views of their bedrooms. Lundy Puffins have worked hard again this week. In English, they learned more about the story ‘Augustus and his smile’; they were able to sequence the story and write a character description for the main character, Augustus. In Maths, they have continued to add and subtract two-digit numbers and are now moving on to adding three one-digit numbers. They are definitely improving their recall of number facts, so thank you for your support with this. In Science, they continued with their work on food chains and invented their own food chain. In their topic work they began to look at a world map and learned a bit more about tigers. Next Thursday, we have the Diwali workshop which everyone is looking forward to.
This week HMS Echo (year 4) have been writing our poems about woodlands afetr we visited the jungle and collected idead for our poems. We learnt new vocabulalry like encountered, unearthed and gradually. In art we have been creating our snowy Christmas cards and using pen techniques to draw pictures of Appledore. In maths we have been leaarning how to use column addition and subtracttions and how to exchange using the thousands, hundreds, tens and ones. It was sometimes tricky! In topic we have been learning about recycling and plastic polution, including reusing, recycling and reducing.
This week Seahunter have been learning how to add and subtract 2-digit numbers both borrowing and carrying in Math, using the column method. For English, we have revisited complex sentences and looked at the conjunctions used. The children have also practised checking and editing writing to improve it, and made a plan to start their independent writing on Monday. In Science, we carried out an elicitation task on rocks and soils, and have begun to categorize rocks according to their properties. In P.E, the class have carried out their personal best challenge – shuttle runs.4
Factors and multiples in maths for year 6 this week and writing character profiles in liteacy in preparation for writing their Beowulf related stories. Making Chrsitmas cakes and learning about Anglo-Saxon place names and finding them on a local OS map. Did you know that -ham means village (eg Northam) and -ford means by a river (eg Bideford)?
Year 6 has had another busy week. They enjoyed beginning their World War Two topic: finding out about the outbreak of war and then in Outdoor Learning the ‘Dig for Victory’ campaign – which onion club will grow the biggest onion or the most onions? In Literacy, they have published their latest books and started diary writing related to Michael Morpurgo’s book ‘Friend or Foe’. Maths had entailed work on factors and multiples and trying to make sure that they are clear about the difference – children who know their times tables really well, found this work much easier! In science, they have set up an experiment to see where bread will grow the most mould – they are really looking forward to collecting the results of this – I apologise in advance if they set up their own version at home.
