Newsletter for the week ending 23rd July
An end of a busy week, a busier term and arguably the busiest year! Lots to read about as we end term, so please click on the headline to read the main section of this article for news of this week and next year.

Today we welcome back our Year 6 children from their residential trip this week on Exmoor and immediately bid them farewell as they depart for secondary school. We wish them every success in their next adventure.
As soon as the summer term ends we immediately start planning for the next academic year. Provided the pandemic is kept under control and the guidance we are required to work under reflects this next term will see the lifting off restrictive and protective measures necessary over the past two academic years. Planning for the autumn term opening and organisation of routines will begin next week. We will communicate this information to you at a point in the summer when we can be reasonably confident that it will not change. Therefore, please keep and eye out for texts and emails from us over the summer. If you have changed your email address and/or mobile number in the past couple of months please contact admin@appledoreprimary.co.uk with the new details.
Thank you for the supportive messages we have received recently and over the past challenging months. Knowing this support is out there really helps the staff to dig even deeper into their reserves when facing the varied and often new challenges the pandemic brings.
Staff look forward to working with our new House Captains for next year: Atlantic – Libby and Dom; Arctic – Lucy and Max; Pacific – Mollie and Stan and Indian – Jean and Jude. The chidlren will both lead and support staff with the orgnisation and running of various school activites for all the children.
When buying new uniform, please check the correct uniform. If you are unsure, please do check or call us on 01237 474365 before buying. If children attend school with incorrect uniform we will discuss it with them and if it continues we will make contact with you to check the message the got home.

AROUND THE CLASSES
Turtles and Dolphins have had a great last week. On Monday Dominique from the Library visited us and read us a story in The Jungle. On Tuesday we had a lovely walk down to the village to buy an ice cream and then a picnic in the park. On Wednesday we had a campfire in The Jungle with Jayne from Forest School. On Thursday we had an Olympic Day. We found out where Tokyo is in the world and we learned about the torch and the rings. We talked about Sonny’s Uncle taking part.
Year 1 have reached the end of this current academic year and whilst it is nice to think about the prospect of a summer holiday, it is also a time for reflection. This year has presented many challenges and has been a time where our resilience has been tested to the extreme. Despite this, the children in Year 1 have shown incredible strength of character and willingness throughout the year. I have never been prouder to teach such a group of children. It has been a joy to watch the children grow and develop. Thank you for your amazing support throughout the year and I wish you all a safe and relaxing summer holiday.
Mrs O’Shea and I (Mrs Stanbury) would like to say a big thank you to all parents and carers this year for their support this year, we very much appreciate it. We’d also like to say thank you to all the Lundy Puffins for being absolute superstars. All year they have worked hard, whether that is in school or online, and we are incredibly proud of them all. They have shown resilience and determination and have made great progress with their learning – well done! This week has been spent finishing off work and having fun spending time with each other. They spent a brilliant morning in the park and it was great to see their teamwork as they played together in a big group. We wish you all a well-deserved, relaxing break.
Seahunter have had a brilliant year as Year 3s and faced the many challenges it has brought with determination and resilience. This week has been a great ending with a fabulous trip to Rosemoor on Wednesday. Despite the heat, they did some fantastic learning about pollination and how plants grow then demonstrated their kindness to one another again in the afternoon, playing cooperatively and enjoying each other’s company. We wish you all a very peaceful summer and look forward to being back together in September
HMS Echo have had a busy last week in Year 4. The children have published their versions of Firebird to be changed on the reading display, and completed their learning about shape in Maths. We have come to the end of our Topic work about earthquakes and looked at how volcanoes are closely linked, and also summed up our learning about electricity in Science. The class have enjoyed taking part in some extra P.E sessions this week where they have consolidated their tennis and cricket skills. Well done all on a successful year in Year 4! I hope you all enjoy a well-deserved summer break!
Year 5 have had a busy week completing their maths on measures – including volume and capacity. They have also finished and published poems for ‘Where My Wellies Take Me’ and have done a variety of assessments and had some results which I hope they’ll share with you – they have worked really hard. Some children have timestables to try and master over the summer (instant recall is what we are aiming for) – it will make life so much easier in Y6 and some children would benefit from repeating some of the Y3/4 spellings that they still do not know – children will have a copy of the spellings they need to learn. Children have brought some of their exercise books home – it would be a good idea to keep the maths and literacy in particular as there will be reminders of skills and questions covered. We hope you have a lovely summer!
Mrs McMorine writes: Year Six have had an amazing last week at Simonsbath. They have completed many challenges at the centre, rode mountain bikes on Exmoor, got very wet from a river scramble and spent a fantastic day in Lynmouth. Photographs of the residential will be put onto Google classroom for you to see. I would to thank parents for all the support they have given over the past two years and wish all the class the very best as they start their journey through secondary school.
