Newsletter for the week ending 28th May

AROUND THE CLASSES
When in Turtles and Dolphins we arrived at school on Tuesday we found a picnic basket full of delicious things, we thought Little Red Riding Hood had left them for us. We have retold the story of Little Red Riding Hood and we thought about whether the wolf in this story was the same as the wolf in The Three Little Pigs. We have had a go at basket weaving. We talked about the things we would take to Grandma to make her feel better. Today we made some sandwiches and had a picnic of our own as a treat.
I cannot believe that we are 5/6 of the way through this academic year. The first half of this summer term We have had great fun in Year 1 this week which ended with a fantastic trip to the beach on Thursday. In class, we have been learning about fractions in maths. The children have learned about quarters this week. The children have found quarters of shapes and then used sharing to calculate a quarter of quantities. In our writing, we have been learning about suffixes. The children have added ‘er’ and ‘est’ to words in order to compare animals. On Thursday we took the children to Westward Ho! beach in order to conduct a beach clean. I was really proud of the children’s maturity and determination. We collect a very large bag of mostly plastic waste which the children were appalled about. Have a fantastic half-term break.
The highlight of the week for Year 2 was definitely our beach clean at Westward Ho! We were incredibly lucky with the weather and the children were amazed by how much plastic waste was found amongst the pebble ridge. They have been so enthusiastic about the topic and many have been inspired to encourage others to think about plastic usage and waste. They have written some amazing stories based on the book The Dragon Machine using all the skills they have learnt. In Maths, they have been learning about position and direction. The children have worked incredibly hard this half term and should be very proud of themselves. We wish you all a relaxing break.
Seahunter have had an amazing week with Miss Rose teaching their English and Maths. In English, they have worked incredibly hard to get to grips with the past perfect tense and how to use this in their writing.They have also demonstrated their understanding of adverbs and writing dialogue using speech rules. They have developed their skills brilliantly so they are ready to plan and write their own fantastic stories after the half term break. In Maths, they have been learning about 3D shape properties and have taken on board and used new vocabulary with confidence; edges, vertices and faces as well as many shape names! In P.E. they developed some great rugby skills; learning to run forwards and pass backwards. Not an easy task! Finally, they have created some lovely poems, posters and stories linked to our value, honesty, some of which will be displayed on the values board in the main corridor. Well done Year 3 for a brilliant half term. You all deserve a lovely break.
In Maths, HMS Echo have been learning how to read the time on both an analogue clock and a digital clock, and have been comparing times of the day. In English, we have started learning a new text ‘Firebird’ where we have discussed traditional tales and patterns that they follow, written similes about mythical creatures and started to look at different sentence constructions. In P.E, the children had their final tennis session with Lottie from Atlantic Racquet Centre. In Topic, the class learnt how to use 4-figure grid references to read an OS map, looking at reservoirs in Wales, linking to our learning about ‘Water’.
Another busy week in Year 5! We have been writing our own version of ‘The Day the Crayons Quit’ and I have to say there has been some wonderful imagination shared in class – who knew the things that items would say if they could talk! In maths, we have been measuring angles and drawing and measuring angles accurately – I have been impressed with the precision from some children! In science, it’s all about forces – we are glad of the better weather and will have hopefully tested out our parachutes and planes – some great designs there too. In topic, we have reached an informed conclusion as to why the English navy won the battle of the Armada – there were varied views but a shared consensus about it being significant in building power for England. In PE, we braved the weather for tennis last week and have enjoyed the dryer spell for cricket and tennis this week – it has felt amazing being able to take part in these again. Children have important homework towards their Arts Award to complete over the holiday – please encourage them to do this. Have a lovely half-tem – let’s hope the sun shines
This week in maths Y6 have been learning about angles and how to draw and identify them accurately. For example, working out an angle in a circle by subtracting the other angle. In outdoor learning we have been weeding and getting rid of leaves and grass near the onions we planted a while ago. For art we were sewing to fix our wall hanging together. This was extremely challenging! We have continued to do a lot of work towards our art award. We created ‘honesty’ posters for this term’s value and listened to a story about two brothers. Dominique, from Appledore Library, came to talk to us about a maritime heritage trail the class are going to be helping with. We were given lots of information for us to start the project after half term. We are hoping the weather will change for the better today so we can get out to play cricket and tennis.
