Newsletter for the week ending 18th September
It’s been a very busy week and the children and staff have been great with emedding all the new ways we have to operate.
Thank you so much for helping us by wearing face coverings on the school premises. Please do continue with this. If you are medically exempt from wearing one please let us know and we will make arrangements for taking your child to an exit point so you don’t need to come on the premises.
Secondary schools are beginning to advertise open days activities aimed at current year 6 and sometime year 5 children. When schools contact us direct with information about this we will publsih it in the weekly newsletter. We are trying to minimise the number of items that come in to school and go home from school at present, so with this in mind please can you not send birthday sweets in for the class. Sorry to be miserable!.

AROUND THE CLASSES
This week in FSU we have been started our new topic ‘Paws and Claws’ and we have started off finding out about our pets. We have painted pictures of our favourite pets and made collages of them. We have described features of our pets and talked about how they move and had a go at moving like them.
Another fantastic week in year one! The highlight for me has been listening to the children discussing their mathematical understanding of number in our maths sessions this week. We have been exploring patterns in our number system and looking visual representations of numbers from 1 to 10. Through this, the children have been developing their ability to identify numbers by looking at patterns and shapes. We have continued to use the book ‘My Favourite Game’ to inspire our writing lessons. Thank you to all those who have made accessories at home for your little characters. The children have enjoyed playing with them this week, furthering their imaginative adventures.
Lundy Puffins have had another good week; well done everyone! In English, they have continued to think about the adventures their miniature friend can go on and have started to collect and experiment with words and phrases they might use in their writing. In Maths, they have continued with place value and working on how many tens and ones each teen number has. Our polar bear topic has started and they have begun to think about what they would like to find out about polar bears. They have spent some time in the Art Studio using oil pastels and have used the new Chromebooks for the first time, which was very exciting.
Seahunter have had a great second week back at school. In English, we have been reading Daphne and The Doughnuts by Jessie Burton, which is one of the stories featured in The Book of Hopes. This was collated during lockdown and is available online as an e-book if you want to read it with your child at home. We have explored how animals can bring us hope and joy and have been developing writing skills that will eventually be used to create their own animal themed hope stories. In Maths, we have been looking at number bonds to 100 and the children have worked hard to make good progress. In our topic work, we have read the start of ‘The Great Green Forest’ by Paul Geraghty, in which a tree mouse loses her home. We have explored the feelings of the mouse and the questions she has about why the forest is being destroyed. We will do some research over the next few weeks so that we can find answers to her questions.
This week in Year 4, the children have been focusing on Place Value in Maths where they have practiced rounding numbers to the nearest 10 and 100, as well looking at numbers on a number line. In English, we have been learning how to write prepositional phrases from ‘Daphne and the Doughnuts’. The children have started to create their own ideas for a similar story. We have been learning about recycling and what we can do in class to be more economically friendly and the class also made posters to encourage others to recycle! The class have been on their first kilometre run and showed great perseverance!
Y5 have had a busy week reading texts from ‘The Little Book of Hope’, working with place value in maths and exploring materials in science. They are becoming more used to our routines and are starting to settle to work more easily and I’ve seen some lovely handwriting too! As our topic is Plastic Pollution we would normally do a beach clean to look at the different kinds of plastic waste that is unfortunately found on the beach. If you have any time to do this yourselves and can take a picture of what you have found, we’ll be able to share it in class and would love to hear all about it – I can show the children how they can share this next week.
In maths Y6 have been learning about rounding, negative numbers and common factors.Eg, 137,126 rounded to the nearest thousand is 137,000 and the common factors of 18 are 1,2,3,6,9 &18. In English we have been writing a story from the Book of Hopes and we have also been writing poems. In art we have been drawing half of our faces and in topic we have learnt about climate change. We have been using Google Classroom for our homework and we’re all enjoying it. By Emilie and Amy
