Newsletter for the week ending 13th December
The end of another excitable week running up to Christmas that started with our nursery and reception children performing a very special nativity early. So many of you came out to see it, including returning in the evening in atrociuos weather! Thank you for all of your support. Next week it is the turn of Years 1 and 2 on Tuesday (2pm and 6pm) and then our carol service on Thursday (St Mary’s church, 2pm) – we hope to see many of you at these celebrations.
Thank you to the PTA for their help and all the staff supporting the children with the making of their Christmas enterprise craft. Each year it gets more and more creative and the ginger scented kiln fired gingerbread man tree decorations are no exception!

AROUND AND ABOUT THE CLASSES
Christmas has arrived in our Foundation Stage Unit! We loved performing our Nativity, we hope you enjoyed it as much as we did. Thank you to everyone that attended, we raised £144.40 for The North Devon Hospice. We have decorated our rooms and started to make our Christmas cards and finished off our decorations to sell today. We have painted pictures of snowmen and reindeers.
The week started off brilliantly with the FSU Christmas play. It was fantastic and we really enjoyed watching it. We have also spent lots of time rehearsing our Nativity, the children have been working hard and it is looking great. In Maths we have been challenging ourselves by balancing addition number sentences and finding the missing number. In Writing we have continued on our Australian adventure and have written diary entries for our trip to Uluru and a day at the beach.
Lundy Puffins were able to watch a fantastic Nativity on Monday performed by the children in the Foundation Stage. They sang and spoke beautifully. This week has also been all about our own Christmas play. They have held their final practice and have tried on all their costumes. They can’t wait to perform to you on Tuesday 17th December at 2pm and again at 6pm. You may take the children home after the first performance and then return them to school in time for the second performance. Elsewhere, they enjoyed Christmas lunch and have begun to plan their final piece of writing. Maths assessments have been completed and Indian elephant prints decorated! The elephant prints will form part of the corridor Art display after Christmas, so make sure you pop in to have a look in the new year.
Seahunter had a great time this week visiting Rosemoor for a rocks and souls workshop. They were able to share their amazing knowledge about rocks and learn some new facts before working hard as scientists to test and identify soils. They used test tubes, pipettes, indicator fluid and recorded their results. They enjoyed testing the acidity of different liquids and learning that gardeners at Rosemoor use these skills to find the right soils for each plant. Mary who ran the workshop was very impressed with the children’s enthusiasm and eagerness to learn, which was lovely. We were also very impressed by their cleaning up skills as the classroom was a rather muddy mess!
This week in Maths, HMS Echo have been further working on their times tables and have carried out an assessment task for Multiplication and Division to show how much they’ve learnt. In English, they have written up and edited their versions of ‘A River’ which they will publish next week. In Topic, the children have finished researching the world river of their choice and have begun to make booklets to present their research and have also written their own river poems
Y5 have been busy writing in their African adventure journal. They have now found out about the African savanna, the Masai villages and their homes. In topic work they looked further at urban and rural homes in both Ghana and Tanzania. In maths they have continued their work on geometry, looking at how to find the perimeter and area of irregular shapes. End of term progress assessments have been completed. We have seen some fantastic country projects handed in this week; we will share these in class and put them up on display. We are now busy learning the Christmas carols ready for the church next Thursday.
Year 6 have been completing work on Harry Clement this week in literacy – they were fascinated about what his life was like in World War II as a Clovelly evacuee. They have been securing how to multiply and divide fractions in maths. They have made hot chocloate reindeer for the Christmas Jolly. They are also in the middle of reading the ‘A Christmas Carol’ from the schools BBC Radio. They did a great job helping with the school Christmas dinner which we were all grateful for – well done!
