Another busy week a dn Christmas has certainly arrived! A big thanks to year 6 for kicking it off with our first Christmas performance with some amazing singing in the Community Hall. please read on to find out what else has been happening…
AROUND AND ABOUT THE SCHOOL
Musical News
The Choir sang with great confidence on Tuesday evening at the Christian Aid Carol Service at the Methodist Church in Bideford. The evening raised £423.16 ! Two current pupils, Ellie and Milo and one past pupil, Rhi were also busy as the Appledore Training Band played several times during the evening. Very well done to everyone!
Christmas Fair
Friday 13th December, 3pm-5pm. Please join us for a cuppa and cake and to admire/purchase your child’s Christmas creations, let your children make presents in the art studio with Abby, visit Father Christmas and more…
Ear Rings
Please note that staff are no longer permitted to tape over a pupil’s ear rings during PE or other activities, so if a child attends school wearing ear rings that are not possible to remove any related injury is the responsibility of the parents / carers.

AROUND AND ABOUT THE CLASSES
This week in FSU we have focused on the story ‘Stick Man.’ We have loved reading the story, making Stick Man and hunting for different shaped sticks in The Jungle. We have painted pictures of Stick Man and thought about other objects that Stick Man could become. We have also been opening our Advent Calendars and practising our Christmas play, we look forward to performing it to you on Tuesday.
The highlight of this week was our trip to the Plough on Wednesday. The play was great and it was even better to watch how much the children were enjoying it. Thank you to all the parents who came with us and helped make the trip run smoothly. We have also spent time this week practising our Nativity play and on Thursday morning we walked down to the Baptist Church to watch the Year 6 children perform their version of the Nativity. We have also started our Australian diaries and have explored the Great Barrier Reef.
Lundy Puffins had a fantastic time at the Plough Theatre in Torrington watching a performance of ‘The Velveteen Rabbit’. In English, they have generated ideas for their own stories and have looked at the vocabulary they might want to use. Some of the instructions they have written are on display outside the hall, with more coming soon, so please make sure you come and have a look. In Maths, they have looked at strategies for adding 3 one-digit numbers. On Thursday morning they joined the rest of the school in the chapel for a Christmas open the book assembly. Christmas play practices are well under way and they are looking forward to performing.
Seahunter have had a busy week, finishing Christmas decorations and working on the last of our English and Maths topics before Christmas. The have been exploring multiplication and division in Maths and how they can represent problems with images, words and number sentences. In English, they have looked at prepositions and how to write independent and subordinate clauses, so there has been a lot of new vocabulary to learn and understand. In rugby, they braved the cold to continue working on some great passing skills and mastering the art of running forward whilst passing backwards, which was challenging but fun!
This week in Maths, HMS Echo have been focusing on learning their 6,7 and 9 times table facts for multiplying and dividing. In English, the class have written up their own versions of our journey we went on last week, and have looked at writing using different sentence constructions. In Topic, we learnt about rivers of the world. Following this, the children used the computers to research a river of their choice to make an information book about. In Science, we watched a clip about the water cycle and then the children created diagrams to show the different stages.
Y5 have are really enjoying writing their safari journals based on The Lion Journal book. This week they have looked at photos from the Selous Game Reserve and focusing their writing on giraffes or elephants. To help in getting an understanding of what it would be like in wild Africa they watched The Lion King. In maths we have been looking at how to find the area and perimeter of shapes. In science we found out about fossils and discovered more about Mary Anning. In our PSHE lesson we have been looking at different disabilities children may have in a mainstream school; dyslexia, visual impairment, cerebal palsy, asthma and diabetes. Thank you to the parents who came to see our residential powerpoints, there will be another opportunity next week if you missed this.
Year 6 have had a busy week preparing for their Christmas performances: Open the Book on Thursday and The Community Hall on Friday. I am really proud of how they undertook both performances. They had such a lot to remember and sang so well – well done to you all! And of course, thank you to everyone who came to watch! We have, alongside this, completed a SATs assessment and most children have seen improvements in their work since previous assessments – keep working hard and using online games to go over skills we learn in class – hard work does pay off! Year 6 will have a couple of items on sale next week for the Christmas Jolly: home-made Christmas crackers; £1 each and hot chocolate reindeer; also £1 each. Children can purchase their items from class before the Jolly begins. Any spares will be sold off during the Jolly.
