A busy week with more cross county success, Christmas starting (!), library trips, cycling proficiency, Paddington Bear, a visit from the local fire brigade and much, much more. Please read on to find out…
AROUND AND ABOUT THE CLASSES
This week in FSU we have looked at an old favourite story Peace At Last. We have talked about our bedtime routines and the differences between night and day and the things that we do during the day and at night. We have painted pictures of bears, drawn bears using pastels and designed and made our own quilts and pillows for our own bears. We also enjoyed walking to the Library on Tuesday to change our library books.
This week in Year 1 we have researched Australian animals and recorded the facts as sentences for our own story called ‘What do you do with feet like these?’ We have also been learning about suffixes and have added ‘ed’ and ‘ing’ to the ends of words. In Maths we have been looking at numbers to 20. We have found different ways of representing numbers and have partitioned teen numbers. In RE we looked at Christian artefacts. In our Philosophy session we spoke about how great it is that we are all unique and we are working on a display to celebrate how we are all different.
Lundy Puffins have learned a bit more about Diwali and watched a film clip about some children celebrating the festival. They wrote the story of Rama and Sita. In English, they have learned some of the Augustus and his smile story and in Maths, they have been adding and subtracting two 2-digit numbers. On Thursday, the fire brigade came in to talk to them about fire safety and what they do. Christmas has come early in the Art Studio, as they did beautiful drawings of polar bears.
Seahunter finished publisting their amazing Paddington stories and they are now available to read at the writer’s wall. In reading they worked hard to understand and explore how inference is used to give clues using part of the BFG, which they are currently listening to. Maths has continued to be hard work, getting to grips with column subtraction, but the children are using their determination and risk taking skills to have a go and make progress. In English we have started to read and work from Gregory Cool by Caroline Binch. The text is set in Tobago so, as well as making us all want a class trip to the Caribbean(!), it is supporting our topic work this half term.
HMS Echo have been learning how to multiply and divide by 10, 100 and 1000 this week in Maths, and have solved problems in context. In English, we have been working on writing prepositional phrases and fronted adverbials. For P.E, we have continued our gymnastics unit and have practised different ways of travelling. In Philopsophy, we discussed our big question ‘should you treat others how you don’t want to be treated?’.
Y5 have had another busy week. Well done to all those who have successfully passed their level 1 & 2 bikeability course. This has taken place over 2 days this week, with the children learning how to cycle safely whilst out on the roads. A big thank you to Ian and Kevin for being great instructors. The children have been presented with their certificates and badges and we are waiting to have a date confirmed for the final group to do their bikeability days. The whole class took part in a fire safety talk from the Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service and Teresa told them about what to do in an emergency, how to keep safe in the home and what happens if they made a hoax call. It was a really informative session and all listened fantastically. Congratulations to the team of six who represented the school in an athletics tournament at Bideford College. By coming second they have now qualified for the next stage, hopefully in January. There has been some learning in the class! We have started to think about Christmas and making items both for the Christmas Fayre and school display. We have continued in maths with square and cube numbers and have published our Anansi stories. Powerpoints, of the class residential, are nearly complete for parents to view. We will let you know times next week.
Year 6 have been busy writing diaries about WW2 evacuees this week. In maths they have completed a unit on ‘The Four Operations’ – this week has been about BODMAS/BIDMAS (knowing which order to calculate). We have also made gas mask boxes for our trip and enjoyed seeing an Anderson shelter, Dig for Victory garden and photos from Appledore during WW2 at the Maritime Museum. Next week, they will be looking into rationing in more detail and will even have to manage their own ration booklet. Well done to the athletics team, who performed so well today that they have qualified for the next round.
