A very busy week that has seen many children attend sport festivals and our Year 6 attending the education activities at OceanFest today. Please read on to find out about other things that have been going on in and around the classes and for outehr information such as various parenting courses being offered.

North Devon Fringe Theatrefest
The North Devon Fringe Theatrefest is back over the weekend of 27th-30th June 2019! There are many shows across the weekend, at an affordable price, and some shows for families are ‘Pay-What-You-Will’ at the end of the show. Surf Club

Cricket for Girls
On Monday, Devon cricket came into deliver cricket sessions for girls. If your daughter enjoyed the cricket and is interested in taking it up, your nearest cricket club is Bideford and Littleham Cricket Club at Westward Ho!. They run a session just for girls on a Monday evening and also sessions for boys and girls on a Friday, starting at 6pm. For more information, contact Andy Davies on 01271 314306

AROUND THE CLASSES
This week in FSU we have moved to the Arctic and found out about the animals that live there. We have compared their landscape to that of the farm animals, we have painted pictures of polar bears and made penguins from egg boxes and bananas which were lovely! We played an Arctic animal game in PE changed our role play to an airport and the Arctic. We enjoyed our last trip for this year to the Library and changed our books on Tuesday.
This week we have been learning new vocabulary and putting the words into sentences. We have also been learning how long things take to decompose and writing sentences about it. In Maths we have been counting to 100, partitioning numbers and comparing numbers to 100. We have drawn pictures for Regatta posters and then used watercolour paints to paint our pictures. Our Philosophy session this week used the book ‘Stone Soup’ and we discussed the question ‘Can you be successful if you are not honest?’
This week Lundy Puffins have started a new text called ‘The Dragon Machine’. They have thought about the main character and had a go at ‘hot-seating’ him. In Maths, they completed a 100 square investigation and had to put the pieces back together. They have started to create the annual ‘Regatta posters’ which feature scenes of Appledore. In Art they practised drawing ferns with lots of detail ready for the exhibition.
Seahunter have been developing some amazing poetry skills over the past week and we have been impressed with their creative thinking and use of descriptive vocabulary. They have been using pieces of artwork including Van Gogh’s Starry Night and Matisse’s The Snail as inspiration. They are now taking all of the skills they have learnt to create a final poem which they will write about a piece of art that they choose from a selection. There will be a class book of poetry in the writer’s wall area to enjoy by the end of next week. In art, the children worked with Abby t begin their entries to the Appledore and Instow Regatta poster competition. They have taken great care to produce some great line drawings that they will watercolour next week.
This week in Maths, HMS Echo have been learning how to interpret and draw different types of graphs such as a bar chart, a line graph and a pictogram. In Literacy, we have been practising writing speech and complex sentences. The children enjoyed learning the rule ‘I Saw a Wabub’ to help them to remember the conjunctions! In the art studio, the class have drawn their annual Regatta posters. For Philosophy, we read about Emmeline Pankhurt in the book ‘Great Women Who Changed the World’. We discussed our big question ‘Should you try to change the world even if it could get you into trouble?’ This Friday and next Friday the children are lucky that they have a cricket coach who has come in to teach them cricket skills!
Year 5 have been finding the area and perimeter this week in maths and even used scaling too. In literacy they are completing comparisons of animals and in science they have begun work on life cycles. In music they have been refining work on The Carmen and are looking forward to The Mix next week. We still have some homework presentations to see but so far we have really enjoyed finding out about different countries.
This week, we have been finishing off our Theme Park work and are now nearing the end of our cooking sessions. We have made the following dishes: spaghetti bolognaise, chicken curry, cottage pie, jelly and ice cream and other things. We are going to Oceanfest at Croyde and are joining in with beach activities. On Mondays, everyone takes part in tennis sessions with Tom from the Atlantic Racquet Centre and learn how to play professional tennis. Every day this week we have rehearsed the leavers play in the hall. Its been a great week.
