Kingsley School Art and Science Enrichment Morning

AROUND THE SCHOOL
Halloween Disco
This will happen, but not until 9th November so please keep hold of that costume (or buy one after halloween at a greatly reduced price!). The disco is 5pm -6.15pm for Dolphins, Year 1 and year 2 and 6.30pm – 7.45pm for yeasrs 3, 4, 5 & 6. Ticket price is £3 and popcorn, ice lollies and glow sticks are for sale. Tickets must be bought in advance from the school and parent details and agreement need to be provided, see Belinda on reception for both or click here
Thrift Club
There will be no Thrift Club until 5th November which will be the last pay in day. The follwoing week, Monday 12th, will be paying out day between 3.15pm -3.45pm.
AROUND THE CLASSES
This week in FSU we have finished off our Autumn mini topic and looked more closely at Harvest. We made pumpkin soup and bread on Tuesday and I’m sure that you will agree that it tasted delicious. For the rest of the week we focused on the farm and the role they play in Harvest and found out how a combine harvester works. Today we did a little more cooking and made apple crumble.
This week in Year 1 we have been concluding our topic ‘Paws, Claws and Whiskers’. We have recorded the information we found out about Jane Goodall in a fact book about her. We went on a ‘Senses Walk’ to the Jungle, recording all the things we could see, hear, smell and feel. In Maths we have continued to learn about addition, we have found different ways of partitioning numbers, and used the same numbers to make different number sentences. We then read the book the Great Pet Sale, and worked out which pets we could buy for 10p. We also based our Philosophy session on the book, we discussed the question ‘Why was the rat so disrespectful? Thank you all for the lovely homework you have created this half term and for all your support.
This week, in Maths, Lundy Puffins have been practising number bonds, not just to 10, but to all numbers to 10. In English, they have read more of the book: How to Wash a Woolly Mammoth and thought how we could describe what is happening in the pictures. In Science, they learned all about how animals are suited to different habitats and then learned a little bit about food chains. On Wednesday afternoon, they walked to the church to practise their Harvest Festival songs and dance, which they are excited about showing you on Friday afternoon.
Seahunter have come to the end of a busy but brilliant first half term in Year 3. The focus of the first half term is on developing more independent learning and organisation skills and the children have really risen to this challenge. They are coming in independently in the mornings, seeking advice when they need it and using the prompts in the classroom to work out how to be in the right place, doing the right thing at the right time. This positive attitude has meant that they have also made great strides in their learning. They have definitely earned a week’s rest! Have a wonderful rest and we look forward to next half term and the build up to Christmas.
HMS Echo have been learning more about their topic Ancient Greece. We have used the information that we learnt about Greek gods and goddesses to create top trumps cards and play a game of top trumps. We have also designed our own Greek pottery. In Maths, we have continued to learn addition and subtraction skills and have learnt how to subtract using the decomposition method. In English, we have been learning how to write adverbial phrases and expanded noun phrases. In Computing, we have continued to learn coding skills on ‘Scratch’ and learnt how to change a characters costume to make it look like they are dancing.
This week we have been working on column subtraction in maths and we had to carry numbers across into the right place. In English we have been getting in groups and discussing our own story about Freya and the Goblins. We also went on a trip to the Big Bang at Torrington; it was great fun and we learnt so much about science. In singing, we also made a trip down to the church in Appledore. For art we made some fruit masks for a poem we are doing in the church for the harvest festival and finished our Anglo-Saxon brooches. We are looking forward to the residential in November – please make sure you update any medical needs. We have a non-pupil day on October the 29th.
This week, in grammar, Year 6 started learning about co-ordinating conjunctions and have started doing ‘word of the day’ to improve our use of vocabulary. In maths, we did a test involving the four main operations and continued work on factors, multiples and prime numbers. We have begun learning about biographies and autobiographies during our English lesson. Within art, we’ve been making Tudor houses using collage. We invited our parents into class to look at the powerpoints we made following our residential to Heatree. Reporter: Leo and Isabella
