AROUND THE CLASSES
IN FSU We have finished off our Superhero topic this week by thinking how super we are and what we are good at. We have designed and made our own Superhero vehicles – we had some interesting inventions! We have also learnt a little bit about Spiderman.
This week in Year 1 we have edited our final versions of Dear Zoo and have been writing them up neatly to be displayed in the writing display. In Maths we have been sorting groups of objects and numbers. We also had a great morning making number lines in lots of different ways. In Science we have classified animals, learning about mammals, reptiles, amphibians, insects, fish and birds. Our Philosophy session this week used a picture of someone ignoring someone else. We discussed the question ‘Why don’t they like each other?’. We had a great session with lots of children joining in with our discussion.
This week Lundy Puffins were able to bring in an action figure toy from home. They used the toy to stage a ‘rescue mission’. A photograph was taken and they wrote their own story based on the book Traction Man is Here. They will be publishing them next week and they will be available to read on the writing wall very soon. In Maths, they have been counting in 2s, 5s, 10s and 3s. Please practise at home! On Tuesday, they enjoyed a talk fro. A visiting author. They enjoyed a session in the art studio on Thursday afternoon
Seahunter have had an busy week with lots of art. On Monday, they found out about the Battersea Shield, an Iron Age artefact and used their sketching skills to produce some great images. In Maths we have enjoyed using bar modelling to learn how to add numbers that involve bridging ten or one hundred, ready to start column addition next week. Finally, on. Thursday the children spent the morning with Abby in the studios and produced some amazing collage geodes, which will soon be on display in the corridor so watch out for them!
This week in Maths, HMS Echo have been learning how to compare and order 4-digit numbers and have learnt about positive and negative numbers. Next week, we will be starting a new unit on addition and subtraction. In English, the class have created their own stories linked to ‘Meerkat Mail’ which they have published ready to go on display in the corridor next week. In Science, we have been continuing our learning about the digestive system and have looked at animal diets. For P.E, the children have continued to develop their tag rugby skills and focused on passing and scoring. In Computing, we have started to develop our coding skills using the computer programme ‘Scratch’ which we will continue to work on for the upcoming weeks.
This week in Year 5 we have been doing our English stories about the monsters we created last week. We had to use ISPACE, the power of three, fronted adverbials, noun phrases and we made sure we punctuated! In maths we have been learning mental maths and we had a certain amount of time to do questions – they were +/- ones. We also did some maths on positive and negative numbers we had to make number lines that go below zero. We had two book authors who came in to see us and talk to us about our brain their books and why we should read. We have an upcoming trip to Torrington for the Big Bang soon. We are looking forward to the residential coming in November. Don’t forget swimming kits on Monday if you are one of the people who can’t confidently swim 50m. Remember to play Timestable Rock Stars at home if you can remember your log in.
