Sports Day

On Thursday the 12th of July you are invited to a brief introduction to Year 1 from 3.45pm – 4ish in our Year 1 class. It would be great opportunity to meet you all, share some information for next year and answer any questions you may have. From Mrs Stephens (Year 1 class teacher)
AROUND THE CLASSES
We have had a very action packed week this week! On Monday we made our own medals and had our own mini sports day standing on podiums to receive our medals. On Tuesday we looked at objects to decide if they would float or sink and tested them out to see if we were right or wrong. On Wednesday we had a great morning visiting the Lifeboat Station and Dolphins took part in the Sports Afternoon. On Thursday we went to The Jungle to make boats from materials and tested them out, we also helped to settle our visiting Turtles and Dolphins. On Friday we wrote about our trip to The Lifeboat Station and painted pictures of the lifeboat.
On Tuesday 17th July we have our Open Afternoon. At 3pm please come to the FSU so we can sing you some songs and share our Learning Journey’s with you. If your children doesn’t attend Turtles on this session please see Mrs Duda to arrange a time to share your child’s Learning Journey with them.
Year 1 had a great Sports Day with everyone taking part in at least one race and joining in with the afternoon activities in their Houses. Thank you for coming along to support us with Sports Day. We have continued our work on The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch, we have written questions and answers as seagulls and have written a diary as Hamish the cat. In Maths we have continued our work on time, we have been learning how to tell the time to the hour and half hour. We went on an imaginary journey to the Isle of Struay and wrote postcards. On Thursday we walked to the church for our Open the Book assembly and then wrote thank you notes to send to the Open the Book team.
The highlight of the week for Lundy Puffins was Sports Day. Well done everyone for taking part enthusiastically. After reading the book Traction Man (an action figure who goes on lots of mission around the house), they created their own ‘missions’ around the playground and jungle with small world play figures. These were photographed and will be used to write the next stage of the adventure. They have also been busy designing postcards from the Isle of Struay and have been publishing their Dragon Machine books.
Currently at a tennis festival, so I’m hoping for their news when they return…
This week, HMS Echo have been continuing their learning about the water cycle in Science. They observed a demonstration of condensation where we ‘made it rain’ indoors. From this, they drew and labelled a diagram and wrote a scientific explanation about the process of condensation. We linked our Philosophy session to Science this week where the children were presented with a concept cartoon ‘A Nice Cold Drink’, and they had to discuss which character they agreed with and why. For English, the children have written up a story about their own journey either imaginary or real, linked to our book ‘A River’. Next week, the children will be publishing them as books to go on display in the corridor. In Maths, we have continued to work on statistics and will be learning about Geometry next week. The class showed great sportsmanship at sports day on Tuesday and are looking forward to their Tennis Festival on Friday!
Beechcroft have completed their Anansi pop-up book stories, and will share these to their Y2 reading partners on Tuesday. Maths has continued to look at shape and completing end of year assessments. We had a visit from Mrs Recycle who explained how the local landfill sites and filling up and the issues we are having with our rubbish. We looked at how we could Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. To help us think about how we need to save our world they each made their own Earth using an old golf ball and dyed sheep wool.
Year 6 have had a very busy week. Great fun was had at The Wake Park on Monday; the children behaved fantastically and were extremely busy enjoying the Aqua Park, Paddle Boarding and Wake Boarding – thank you to all the parents and staff who helped with transport! They have also had their dress rehearsals for the play (don’t forget to be there Monday 2pm) and have been busy creating stall ideas for the Summer Fayre. On Sports Day, Year 6 did a brilliant job sorting equipment and leading their teams, so thank you to all of you for your help! Year 6 would also like to thank all the people who bought refreshments on Sports Day as they helped to raise money for their end of year party; well done to all those busy parents who gave up their time to make this possible too! Next week Bideford College students will leave Appledore at 8:55am on a coach for transition. Please make sure children are here in time to register before they leave (8:45am). They will return to Appledore via coach for a normal end of the day. The Year 6 photo is available to order – a larger copy is available in class if you would like to see it before placing an order.
