AROUND THE SCHOOL
Summer fayre
The date is set for the afternoon of the 6th July. More details to follow…
Sports Day – 3rd July
The morning activities are for all children from Dolphins to Y6. Activities will start at 9:30. Parents can watch and follow teams around. The morning will finish with the long distance race at around 11:30. Children will go back to classes, they can be collected from class by family members to picnic on the field. The afternoon will start by 1:30 with races for all children from Y1-6 and should finish by 3:30. We will do all we can to follow this schedule, but please be aware changes may need to be made as we progress through the day. We will do all we can to minimise any changes. Fingers crossed for the weather!
AROUND THE CLASSES
This week we have continued with our theme of the beach. We have had a sandcastle competition (see the website for some photos) We have looked at rock pools and the sorts of creatures that make their homes in one. We have had a go at writing stories about the beach and made pictures of beach huts. To finish the week we made some cakes and had a go at using icing to make fish tail to decorate the top of the cake.
This week we have started our new writing sequence. We looked at a picture from The Light House Keepers Lunch and wrote about what we thought was happening in it. Then we read the story and discussed it. We also acted out the story. In Maths we have been learning about money. We have looked at coins, used wax crayons to make rubbings of the coins and played money games on the laptops. Next we will be learning about time. In Art we used paint to mix colours. In Philosophy we read the book Farmer Duck, we discussed the question ‘Why did the farmer make the duck do all the work?’
Lundy Puffins had a fantastic trip to the church with Mrs Smale. They were all very well behaved and learned lots. They have finished their stories and will be publishing these next week. There a some truly amazing stories and some are several pages long! Well done everyone! In Maths, they have been practising their addition and subtraction skills. They have started their Katie Morag topic by watching one of the episodes, looking at the book and talking about the characters. In P4C, they used the story: Katie Morag and the Big Boy Cousins.
This week year 3 have been continuing with their prirate theme by watching Treasure Island, learning pirate songs and creating treasure maps. Next Tuesday they will be having a pirate dressing-up afternoon, so please can the children come to school in their school uniform and bring things to wear that they can change into after lunch.
In Year 4 we have been continuing our maths unit ‘money’. The children have answered worded problems using some of the skills they have learnt. We will be starting our new unit ‘statistics’ by the end of next week. In English, the children have planned and written up our class version of ‘A River.’ We used the journey that we went on for our trip, to write about. For topic, we learnt about bridges and settlements and looked at where bridges should be built and there purpose. After our trip, the class wrote a diary entry using some key words and facts that they had found out about rivers and bridges. In philosophy, we read the book ‘Mr Wolf’s Pancakes’ by Jan Fearnley. From this we discussed the question ‘if someone asked you a favour would you say yes or no and why?’
Thank you to Jo and David who came and helped out on our class trip on Tuesday. We had a fantastic day and the children did Appledore School proud through being polite, kind and focused all day. They asked some great questions along the way, stopped to sketch the bridges and were really engaged when we received our talk in the Burton. The adults were very impressed with the class’s attitude and behaviour. The children were rewarded with some star play at the end of the week. Well done Year 4!
Beechcroft have had another busy week. Last Friday they went to the Queens Theatre to see many fantastic experiments with The Ministry of Science. On Wednesday they all attended the musical event, The Mix, at Bridwell Park. They joined in a range of workshops including: Have a go session (playing a large variety of musical instruments); Carmina Burana where the class helped lead the O Fortuna song; Sharing of their Carmen work with two other schools; playing the ukuleles; an introduction to folk music and learning two new dances and listening to the Lympstone Marine band. It was a great day and some amazing work produced back in class which is being used for the Explore Arts award. In science they have been started looking at life cycles, beginning with the human life cycle. In maths they have continued with metric conversions, using their skills of multiplying an dividing by 10, 100 and 1000. Today looks like they will have another great cricket session with Ian.
Year 6 have had a busy week rehearsing for their play and finishing writing about Appledore. They enjoyed Life Skills at Barnstaple, which gave them really useful advice about keeping safe and have had fun at Skern today Swimming and playing on the field. They are deciding on ideas for stalls for the Summer Fayre which they are looking forward to helping with – they may need help at home preparing items. Next week Torrington and Route 39 pupils are on transition, we hope they have a successful week. Letters for the Wake Park, Sailing and Summer Fayre will go out next week – copies will be kept for children who are not here. Homework involves learning lines for the play and song words.
