AROUND THE SCHOOL

A great end to the week with for our team of runners at the cross country event at Monkleigh School last Friday. The childre raced amazingly and achieved individual placings of first, third, fourth, seventh, eighth, eleventh, twelfth and fifteenth. This afternoon we have a team representing the school in a football tournament at Shebbear College and we’ll report back next week.

AROUND THE CLASSES
This week in FSU we have focused more on dolphins. We have found out about their habitats, eating habits and named their body parts. We have painted dolphins, drawn them and made salt dough models of them. We also watched a video about how they communicate to each other. We very much enjoyed our walk to the Library in the sunshine on Tuesday to change our books.
This week in Year 1 we have invented our own dragons and planned the description we will write about them. Next we need to write and edit our descriptions. In Maths we have doubled numbers, we have investigated arrays and shared objects into equal and unequal groups. In PSHE we have spoken about personal space and saying sorry. Our Philosophy session used the book ‘Fantastically Great Women Who Changed the World’ – we read about Rosa Parks and had a great discussion about her brave actions, and whether it was alright for her to break the law, if we thought the law was wrong.
This week, Lundy Puffins have learned all about how the Great Fire of London started and spread and have written about it. They even baked and tasted some bread using a 17th Century recipe. It smelt delicious and most children were surprised at how much they liked it! They then had a go at writing some instructions for how to make the bread. In Maths, they have been revising their skills of adding and subtracting two 2-digit numbers. Next week, they will be revising multiplication and division, so please keep practising those 2, 5 and 10 times tables – it really does help! In PE, they have completed their last 1km run and most children were able to beat their previous times, some by quite a few seconds! Well done! Next week, they are looking forward to a visit to Rosemoor.
Year 3 and Mrs Adderley have had a very busy week, including: angles, perpendicular and parrallel lines in maths (including aright angle trapezium!); forces of push and pull relating to heavy objects and elastic bands in science and Ancient Egypt in topic and literacy all about King Tut.
In English, in Year 4, we have boxed up our class innovate of ‘The King of the Birds’ changing it to ‘The King of the Cats’, ready for the children to write up on Monday using the skills they have learnt. We have continued to learn about decimals in Maths and focused on making a whole using decimal numbers. In Art we used the laptops to research artists who have been inspired by water. We then practised using ink to make water marks. For Philosophy we watched a clip called ‘Seeking Refuge’, the children came up with and discussed ‘If you had a disaster would you stay on the bright side or give up and why?’
Beechcroft have been extremely busy this week. On Monday they went to ‘We the Curious’ at Bristol for a science day, including a 3D experience in the planetarium. They went onto doing some fantastic writing about the many activities they took part in, explaining the science and technology behind them. On Tuesday they took part in a salt-cod afternoon. They found out about how they fishermen went from Bideford to Newfoundland to catch the fish and why they salted them. They loved listening to the story told by Mike and then going on to do some art work to show the map of the journey. They also made some fish dishes (cod pate and fish balls) with Felicity which were then tested. The fish balls were favourite but everyone tried both dishes. Thank you to the parents who came in at the end of the day to sample them. In literacy we have drafted our own stories based on an emotion thief whilst in numeracy we have continued with our work on percentages. Today we are looking forward to our first session of cricket.
Year 6 have been checking their progress, completing past papers this week – they now know what to check in preparation for their tests on the week beginning 14th May. They have also been writing about their Bristol experience from ‘We Are Curious’ on Monday – a fascinating science day! They had their first taste of rounders again and are looking forward to cricket on Friday – let’s hope he weather is kind.
