Wow! Such amazing costumes on our second attempt at World Book Day. Thank you so much for supporting children with their costumes. The teachers pulled out the stops too and costumes ranged from Alice in Wonderland to Demon Dentist and Burlar Bill to a Unicorn!

We have submitted art by our children to the Schools Exhibition that opens 27 Jan, 2018 – 05 Mar, 2018 that is free to view.
Parent Workshops
All courses will take place at Barnstaple Library and will run from 9:30am until 2:30pm each day. Refreshments are provided but not lunch. UK Safer Internet Centre is excellent at providing advice and tips for safe use and can be found at www.saferinternet.org.uk School are also due to receive a jargon-busting guide regarding children’s use of social media and we will share this when we receive it (click here for more information)
AROUND THE CLASSES
On Monday FSU had a great time retelling our adventures in the snow! For the rest of the week we have focused on Mothers Day, getting our cards and gifts ready – we hope you like them. We have also thought about the meaning of special, who is special to us, what is special to us and any special places.
In Year 1 we have planned and written new stories for our text ‘On the Way Home’. We will now edit our stories before publishing them in our class book. In Maths we have discovered how many tens and ones are in 2-digit numbers (some of us even worked out the place value of 3-digit numbers). We have also found one more and one less than 2 and 3 digit numbers. We have planted bean seeds and have started bean diaries to record their growth. Everybody looked amazing for World Book Day, lots of imaginative costumes. We shared our favourite books and then got into teams to complete a World Book Day Quiz (3 of the teams all scored 15 out of 29 points – very impressive!). We also read ‘Oi Goat’ the new book in the ‘Oi Frog’ series which is a special book for World Book Day.
Well done everybody in year 2 for some amazing World Book Day costumes! They spent the day listening to lots of stories and sharing the different books they had brought in. In English, they have been learning all about verbs and finding them in different sentences. In Maths, they looked at lots of different pictograms and learned how to interpret them. Living things and their habitats is the new Science topic, so they have begun to match different animals and their habitiats. If you are out and about over the weekend, have a look to see what minibeasts you can find in different habitats and tell me all about it next week. They also made some very careful and beautiful cards for Mothers’ Day.
Year 3 got off to a great start this week with another day of filming and art work for the arts trail. In maths, they have worked really hard to get to grips with fractions and have started to apply what they have learnt to real life problems involving numbers. Yesterday they all looked fantastic in their world book day costumes and really enjoyed playing along with who was who, referring to each other in character. Next week, Mr Bishop will start a two week project involving rainforest minibeasts, which we are really looking forward to.
In Year 4 this week, HMS Echo have been continuing to learn and investigate sound. We carried out an investigation to test which material best muffled/absorbed sound. The children also then planned and tested how they could change the volume/pitch of their instruments they made for homework. From this, they wrote scientific explanations to explain what they had to do. In Maths, the children have been learning about fractions and equivalent fractions which we will continue next week. For English, the children have planned their explanation texts ready to write next week. The class have learnt more about the roman army and their uniforms and equipment for topic. They have then cut out their roman shields, ready to paint and decorate next week! Towards the end of the week, as part of World Book Day, the class enjoyed working in teams to complete a book quiz and wrote a book review about the book they had come as a character from. The children all made a huge effort with their costumes for World Book Day and looked brilliant!
This week Beechcroft have continued looking at explanation texts and beginning to think about their own inventions. Some very interesting machines are being designed! In numeracy we have been find the perimeter and looking at reading line graphs. World book day was great with some amazing costumes, the class listened to a story read to them by Mr Bishop. We have been doing a daily 1K run in preparation for next weeks cross-country and trying to improve our timings for the on-going competition. Today (Friday) 10 pupils in the class are going as part of the school choir to Woolsery to take part in a singing day with other local schools whilst the remainder of the class are helping with a beach clean on Northam Burrows.
Year 6 have been busy learning about algebra this week in maths. They have completed Macbeth in Literacy and have been continuing to develop their grammar skills. In art they have produced pop art on the computer with effective results. It is time now to really learn all those spellings in the year 3 and 4 and 5 and 6 word lists – SATs is not that far away! It was great to see such effort put into the World Book Day costumes – some ingenious costumes!
