Arrangements for Sports Day
Sports Day will (fingers crossed!) take place next Tuesday, the 20th June and activities will start at 9:30.
• All children from Dolphins to Year 6 will be in house groups and will complete twelve activities in their teams. You are welcome to come and support your children and their team mates from 9:30.
• At the end of the activities, we will speedily clear away for the long distance races. Children will need to sit in their classes. Spectators will need to move to the playground side of the field.
• When the long distance races are complete, children will go back to their classrooms. Parents are welcome to collect their children from their classrooms, to share a picnic lunch together.
• The afternoon will be for children in classes 1 – 6. They will sit with their classes and compete in races to score points for their house team. Again, you are welcome to come and support your children.
• When the races are complete, you will be welcome to take your children home, but please make sure that you have let their class teacher know.
• All children will need a sun hat, a water bottle with their name on and sun cream. They can come to school wearing their PE kits, if possible they can wear t-shirts the colour of their house

This year it will be held on Friday 7th July, 3.30pm -5.30pm.

LOCAL EVENTS
New Summer School/Holiday Club at Appledore School
The Splodge Summer School will be running here at our school this Summer holiday for children currently in Year One to Year Six. Sessions will run from 10am until 3pm Monday to Friday. Splodge is run by Kate Harvey (our art coordinator at Appledore School) who is looking forward to lots of arty Summer fun with the children. We are now taking bookings for the weeks beginning Monday 7th August and Monday 14th August. AROUND THE CLASSES
FSU has been about the fairies. We have built fairy houses in the jungle, made faity potions and cast firy spells. The fairies even asked us if we could help them!
This week in Year 1 we have all demonstrated how much progress we have made in Phonics, by reading 20 real words and 20 alien words. Everyone worked really hard and did well. Thank you for all your support with their homework connected to this. In English we have continued our work with Christopher Nibble, we have written a list of questions for him, and then pretended to be Christopher Nibble and write answers to the questions. In Maths we have continued our work with time; we have timed how long it takes us to complete a number of activities. We had a great day on Wednesday for Clay Day; we all designed, made and painted clay boats.
Lundy Puffins have finished writing their versions of the story ‘The Dragon Machine’. Instead of a dragon machine they have used lots of other imaginative ideas. We have unicorn machines, dolphin machines, shark machines and many more! In Maths, they have been looking at addition and subtraction. In science they have started to learn about food chains. The seaside holiday topic has continued and this week they have examined photographs and paintings of seaside holidays through the ages. On Wednesday they enjoyed ‘clay day’ and were able to make clay boats. These should be ready to paint on Friday.
Seahunter have enjoyed an exciting week full of Egyptian activities. The highlight was their trip to The Royal Albert Memorial Museum in Exeter. They took part in workshops about mummification, visited the museum tomb (and saw a real mummy in its sarcophagus), learnt to play Senet (an Egyptian game) and spent time at Scribe school (learning to write like an Egyptian). The children learnt so much and really engaged with the activities, asking questions and exploring new ideas. Many museum staff commented on their excellent behaviour and enthusiasm, which was lovely. The day came to a great end when the children chose to sing the song they have learnt about Tutankhamun to the staff. They ended up gathering quite a crowd and received a round of applause! Well done Seahunter for a memorable, valuable visit.
What a busy week! On Wednesday, Year 4 made boats from clay, adding a driftwood mast and wire rigging. These will be painted and decorated with miniature flags. On Thursday, everyone enjoyed a day out, catching the ferry to Instow and then walking along the Tarka Trail to the Burton Art Gallery. They also enjoyed their lunch in the park and learnt about the history of Bideford long bridge. They will use the information gathered to write and illustrate their own book.
In PE, Year 4 have been practising their cricket skills and athletics, ready for sports day next week.
Year 5 have completed more of their art books as well as taking part in clay day; they are looking forward to painting their creations next week. In maths they have been learning how to use a protractor – let them show you their skills at home. In science we have begun a new unit on Animals including humans – don’t worry if they ask you questions about getting old(er), it’s in aid of research for science! They had a fantastic game of rounders in PE this week; batting and catching skills have certainly improved. Next week is looking busy with Sports day on Tuesday as well as our trip to Chivenor on Friday. We also have Maths week and will be reading 2 stories and solving problems around them.
This week for Year 6 has been packed with stuff! We have done many a thing including: acting, singing, P.E, Literacy, and moving heavy objects. We did a bit of practise on our school play (no spoilers) today and Tuesday. Also, we’ve done a lot of practising our singing in which we sang songs from our play. In P.E we played kwik cricket and a bit of rounders’ which was great fun. Some of us went on a school trip on Wednesday to the Maritime museum for a Victorian School boy/girl experience whilst others went to do clay work with Sandy Brown in her studio. We wrote about our experiences from these events as a recount. We all made clay boats this week.
We are looking forward to going to Oceanfest on Friday. Watch for our report next week.
