Art Studio at Appledore School
We want to create an art studio on the school premises for our children to use, but we need help! Please could you come to a meeting at 5.45pm on Friday 19th May to discuss how we all can make it happen. House Cross Country
This week we held our second, annual House cross country competition. My memories of school cross country include scores of children dreaming up fanciful excuses for not running. Well, that’s certainly NOT the case at Appledore School! So much enthusiasm, so much talent and so much encouragement too. Well done everybody involved.
Westward Ho! Seaside Festival 2017 Sunday 28th May and Thursday 1st – Sunday 4th June
Five days of community events brought to you by the combined churches, community and voluntary groups in Westward Ho! The Westward Ho! Seaside Festival is spread over 5 days ofthe Whitsun school half term with a range of free and affordable activities andevents for all ages. A spectacular sea rescue display by the Bideford CoastguardTeam and Appledore RNLI starts the Festival on Sunday 28th May. Duringthe day there will be a free bouncy castle and face painting in The Park, asand castle competition on the beach and displays by the all the local groupswho have organised the Seaside Festival.From Thursday 1st June – Sunday the 4thJune the Seaside Festival will extend into all of the community and churchvenues in Westward Ho! The Baptist Church is hosting a craft exhibition, while atHoly Trinty Church the celebrated local ceramicist, Harry Juniper, is running apottery workshop. Throughout the four days each church has a range ofexhibitions and events, with highlights by Simeon Wood and performance troup Encore. Circus Bezercus are making a rare visit to North Devon withtheir astonishing and hilarious show A Mismatch in Devon. This is one of themany live events hosted by Kingsley Hall where the public can also seemarvellous performances by local musicians and join in the Festival Barn Dance.On the slipway and beach there will be a rock pool rambleand high tide treasure hunt. Westward Ho! Park will be hosting two family fun days withbouncy castles and face painting, a charity dog show and a BBQ. There are freeflag making workshops at Happy Café throughout the Festival. The Village Green and Promenade will be a performance space duringthe Festival featuring Bideford Town Band and Westward Ho! Youth Theatre. A grand Carnival Flag Parade along the sea front andpromenade on Sunday 4th June with Samba Baia completes the open airattractions. New Summer School/Holiday Club at Appledore School
The Splodge Summer School will be running here at our school this Summer holiday for children currently in Year One to Year Six. Sessions will run from 10am until 3pm Monday to Friday. Splodge is run by Kate Harvey (our art coordinator at Appledore School) who is looking forward to lots of arty Summer fun with the children. We are now taking bookings for the weeks beginning Monday 7th August and Monday 14th August. Around the Classess
This week in FSU we have been learning about the 3 Little Pigs. We have retold the story and acted it out. We went to the jungle and made houses for the pigs. today we read the story from the wolf’s point of view to find out if he was a bad or good wolf – what do you think?
This week we have been working very quietly in Year 1, so that the Year Six children could concentrate on their SATs. We hope they appreciated it! In Writing we have identified verbs in the text Diary of a Wombat. We have then made a list of verbs for acrobats, and written sentences for Diary of an Acrobat. In Maths we have been looking at the properties of 2D and 3D shapes, and are very good at naming the shapes. We have also used directional language to guide Mothball the Wombat to reach her carrots. We are getting much better at African Drumming, and are almost able to play together in time. Everyone did really well in the Cross Country, with the whole class completing the race and trying their best.
Lundy Puffins have enjoyed having Miss Johnston teaching them for some lessons this week. In Maths they have been revising their knowledge of multiplication and division. In English, they’ve been writing non-fiction texts about seaside holidays in the past. This linked with their history topic where they answered the question: What did people do at the seaside 100 years ago? The highlight of this week was the house cross country competition. Well done to everyone who took part.
Seahunter have completed and published amazing books about Tutankhamun this week. They have worked so hard as a team in all aspects of their school day and we have enjoyed seeing them praise and support each other. They have all been super learners! This was really evident in the house cross country competition when they encouraged one another regardless of their house. In Maths they have tackled new methods for multiplying 2 digit numbers with Miss Goodman. Finally, they have produced some beautiful Egyptian sunset watercolours and clay work which will be completed next week to display in the classroom.
Year 4 have continued to use The King of the Birds story in Literacy. We have summarized the book into five sections and developed a similar story about animals. In maths, we are looking at decimals and how they are linked to fractions. This has lead on to money problems, so if you are shopping this weekend, let your children work out the total and change needed! As our topic is all about rivers, we made our own one outside and watched how the rain made its way down the hillside to form a lake. We then recreated this with paint on paper, adding details with pencil
Year 5 have experienced some of their own tests this week – the have worked hard and can see how much they still have to learn. They have also looked at mechanisms in science and designed their own machines to complete jobs that they would rather not do! In art they have completed dot paintings and started Regatta posters. Catch of the day in cricket on Friday was Lucy, but Shane wins the most catches title
This week in Year 6 we have been doing SATS. SATS was pretty difficult for most people but easy for others. We did (altogether) 6 papers: Arithmetic, Reasoning 1, Reasoning 2, Spelling, Reading and Grammar. We also managed to fit into the week A LOT of P.E (including house cross country), science and leavers photos. In P.E we played rounders twice, cricket once and A LOT of extra breaktime! In science we went down to the jungle to make a tally chart on how many bugs/animals we could find for the start of our science unit of ‘Living things and their habitats’. By Class Reporter Laurence.
