Westward Ho! Seaside Festival 2017 Sunday 28th May and Thursday 1st – Sunday 4th June
Five days of community events brought to you by the combined churches, community and voluntary groups in Westward Ho! The Westward Ho! Seaside Festival is spread over 5 days ofthe Whitsun school half term with a range of free and affordable activities andevents for all ages. A spectacular sea rescue display by the Bideford CoastguardTeam and Appledore RNLI starts the Festival on Sunday 28th May. Duringthe day there will be a free bouncy castle and face painting in The Park, asand castle competition on the beach and displays by the all the local groupswho have organised the Seaside Festival.From Thursday 1st June – Sunday the 4thJune the Seaside Festival will extend into all of the community and churchvenues in Westward Ho! The Baptist Church is hosting a craft exhibition, while atHoly Trinty Church the celebrated local ceramicist, Harry Juniper, is running apottery workshop. Throughout the four days each church has a range ofexhibitions and events, with highlights by Simeon Wood and performance troup Encore. Circus Bezercus are making a rare visit to North Devon withtheir astonishing and hilarious show A Mismatch in Devon. This is one of themany live events hosted by Kingsley Hall where the public can also seemarvellous performances by local musicians and join in the Festival Barn Dance.On the slipway and beach there will be a rock pool rambleand high tide treasure hunt. Westward Ho! Park will be hosting two family fun days withbouncy castles and face painting, a charity dog show and a BBQ. There are freeflag making workshops at Happy Café throughout the Festival. The Village Green and Promenade will be a performance space duringthe Festival featuring Bideford Town Band and Westward Ho! Youth Theatre. A grand Carnival Flag Parade along the sea front andpromenade on Sunday 4th June with Samba Baia completes the open airattractions. Vandalism Last Weekend
Sadly, we experienced some vandalism last weekend, particularly in the outdoor play areas for our youngest children. If you have any information that might help us find the culprits, pelase contact the school
New Summer School/Holiday Club at Appledore School
The Splodge Summer School will be running here at our school this Summer holiday for children currently in Year One to Year Six. Sessions will run from 10am until 3pm Monday to Friday. Splodge is run by Kate Harvey (our art coordinator at Appledore School) who is looking forward to lots of arty Summer fun with the children. Non-Pupil Day
Please be aware that there is a non-pupil day on Friday 26th May, so school will break-up for half term at the end of Thursday 25th May.
Around the Classess
FSU have continued with the theme of Jack and the Beanstalk, making a giant beanstalk reaching from one end of the unit to the other. We have made giant and little shoes and socks to hang from the beanstalk. We have planted beans and cress in different conditions to see exactly what plants need to grow. We also had a visit from the giant in the middle of the night, we came to school today to see footprints left in the unit along with a giant key. We wrote letters to the giant to find out why he had visited us.
This week in Year 1 we have continued our work with adding and subtracting. We have solved missing number problems by using our knowledge of the way addition and subtraction are connected. We have also used a calendar to work out what the date and day would be in 4 days, 10 days, 20 days etc. In writing we have improved sentences from ‘Diary of a Wombat’ by adding adjectives. We have also identified the verbs and adjectives in sentences from the book. On Wednesday the RNLI came into school to teach us how to stay safe at the beach.
Lundy Puffins enjoyed an assembly from the Lifeguards this week and learned how to stay safe on the beach. The seaside holidays in the past topic has continued and they have looked at paintings and photographs from the seaside 100 years ago and noted any similarities and differences to the seaside today. They then wrote a postcard from the seaside 100 years ago, thinking about the things they might have seen / done on the beach. In Maths, they have continued with addition and subtraction. In English, they have learned how to use different types of sentences
Seahunter have had a super week, working on their reports about the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb and the results are looking great! The children have enjoyed having Miss Goodman in class for some of the week and are looking forward to her teaching from next week. In P.E. we have been enjoying cricket and practising running ready for the house cross country competition next week. Some children have really worked on their pace and are planning their tactics for the big race!
HMS Echo have now switched to fiction writing focusing on the text King of the BIrds written and illustrated by Helen Ward. The class will be using this story to develop writing stories which include poetic devices and to confidently use inverted commas when including dialogue. In maths, we have moved on from times and timetables to using the formal written method for addition and in particular, finding information from tables to answer worded problems. The class have been making quite of lot of noise this week as they have begun their drumming sessions…… we will be developing keeping closely to a steady beat! Many thanks to all the parents who have sent in their voluntary contribution of £1 towards the costs of cooking. The first sessions will begin next week.
Year 5 have enjoyed more problem solving in maths (including magic square investigations) and thinking about mechanisms in science. They had a great trip to Rosemoor and found out about how to obtain dyes from natural materials – just because a plant is a particular colour, it doesn’t mean it will produce the same colour dye. They made some interesting pictures from their home-made paint and we hope to find some of our own materials to test soon – hopefully we’ll be able to use them for our Aboriginal paintings. Rosemoor commented on how polite the children were when using resources at the centre – a proud moment! They have also been improving their Djembe drumming skills – noisy but fun!
This week has been normal (well at least for year 6). We did a few regular things including: reading, writing, maths and science. Last Friday we started doing cricket in the mornings and this will continue every Friday after break time. We also (on Wednesday) played ‘rounders’ on the field. We have also done A LOT of revision but Year 6 is 100% ready now to start SATS on Monday! We also finished our writing on Treasure Island and have been doing some more work on our island works. We researched information on: Tahiti, Greenland and the Hawaiian Islands.
