Newsletter for the week ending 18th November
Christmas Dinner for pupils is on Tuesday 13th December. For all pupils in Years 3-6 who want a Christmas Dinner, please pay £3 by end of Monday 5th December.

Around the Classes
We have still continued with our theme on space in FSU, but the aliens have arrived! We have read lots of alien stories to find out what they look like and what they like to do. We had a letter from one alien telling us that they were scared of us but they wanted to find out more about us, the children got very fired up about this and we had lots of interesting letters to send to the alien which made him come and visit us today! This gave us the opportunity to interview him and find out about alien life from a real life alien!
This week in Year 1 we have continued learning about place value. We have talked about how a 2-digit number is made up of tens and ones. We have also spoken about what happens when you add or take away 1 from a 2-digit number. We have used the maths resources to show our understanding of place value, In English we have finally read the story of Traction Man. We then discussed what we liked and disliked about the story. We looked for any patterns throughout the story and any puzzles that were not solved. On Thursday afternoon Kay is teaching us about the world with the help of Barnaby Bear. This week he travelled to Australia and we learnt lots of information about Australia, as well as trying out some aboriginal style painting. We have also been very busy creating props for our Nativity and rehearsing ready for our first production next week.
In Maths this week, Lundy Puffins have focused on 2D and 3D shapes and completed lots of investigations to find out more about them. Today’s lesson involved them using straws and modelling clay to investigate which 3D shapes they could make. They had to predict which shapes would be possible with the number of straws they had. The stories based on ‘Augustus and his smile’ are finished and will be published very soon. The original story is about a tiger who loses his smile and we now have some fantastic versions of the story – an owl who loses her hoot; a cheetah who loses his spots; a bear who loses its
growl. Rehearsals for the Christmas play are underway and the children are practising saying their lines loudly and learly. Please may we have costumes in by next Wednesday.
Year 3 have been working brilliantly on their topic, finding out about what life was like in World War Two. They looked at images and letters and wrote brilliant stories about being evacuees. They then explored what it was like during the Blitz and how people built Anderson shelters in their gardens for shelter. They looked at images and practised sheltering under the tables listening to the air raid sirens. This inspired them to write some amazing poems about how it felt.
This week in Year 4, the pupils have been busy publishing their report on their chosen aspect of Ancient Greece and making good choices about the layout so that it is interesting for their reader. In maths, we have started work on shape learning about lines of symmetry and how to classify 2D shapes according to their properties such as pairs of parallel sides and the number of right angles. Yesterday, Tigerlily’s mum came in to teach a little bit of the Greek language and they were amazed to discover that several shapes names have Greek numbes as part of the name. In P.E. the pupils have been working hard learning some authentic Greek steps. They are listening to the music really well so that their steps or routine changes when the music get faster. Members of staff walking past the hall door have been very impressed and even stopped for a while to watch!!
In year 5, Literacy has involved using a variety of sentence openers and punctuating speech correctly. Next week we will be writing our own Tudor sea stories using these skills. In maths we have finally completed problem solving and begun multiplication and division. We have also enjoyed using Maths Rockx to sing and learn our tables. In science we have completed our unit on materials and their properties and experiemented with vinegar and bicarbonate of soda, and mixing milk and vinegar – the children didn’t like the smell! Our next group have day 1 of Bikeability this Friday and day 2 next Friday. Thank you to all those who have made payment 2 for the residential (£30 by 25th November). For our Christmas art activites, please have a spare top handy in your bag!
This week in Year 6 we have finished a variety of tasks for example: Math, literacy and science. In Maths we have started a new subject; angles in triangles and quadrilaterals. In English we’ve continued Macbeth, the play, in a different perspective. In science we have started another new subject; Light. In P.E we haven’t done much except run a Mile Run, once every day because of the bad weather and KS1 needing the hall to practice their nativity play. In Topic we have finished our work on Tudor information; Tudor London, Tudor Homes, King Henry the VIII and more! During Monday afternoon assembly we learnt about keeping safe whilst travelling in cars from the local police and fire brigade.
